Last week, I talked about who I thought will win the Emmy for choreography — and I know it’s a bold prediction especially since the nominations haven’t even been announced. I tweeted about her yesterday, but another choreographer I want to put on your radar is Fatima Robinson.
Fatima is legendary in the dance industry because she’s not only a choreographer, she’s a music video director who has worked with artists like Michael Jackson, The Black Eyed Peas, Mary J. Blige and Aaliyah. Her incredible artistry has been seen in Dreamgirls and a TV musical she might get an Emmy nomination for, The Wiz Live.
The TV movie musical is a competitive genre with almost every major broadcast network getting into the game. FOX upped the stakes by going behind the scenes and using indoor and outdoor space with Grease Live. I now anticipate the choreography category to get even more challenging over the next few years.
Dancing With the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance have dominated this category, but they are going to find some major competition now that the TV live musicals are stepping up their game. It makes this category even more exciting than it already was and it forces choreographers to think outside the box when it comes to creativity.
While I don’t think The Wiz Live packs the same punch that Grease Live did when it comes to choreography, this program was a ratings blockbuster. It broke the record for most-tweeted live program by generating 1.6 million tweets and 129 million impressions, so don’t discount Robinson’s impactful contribution to this project.
The Emmy nominations will be announced on July 14.
