The Dance Industry Shifted Directions When You Weren't Looking

Photo credit: Amazon Studios. A change is in the air. Do you feel it? The dance industry has been on a forward-moving path for a long time, but the direction just shifted. Don't worry, it's continuing on its remarkable journey, but things are going to look a bit different in the next decade. The shift may be imperceptible to some, but it began a few years ago. There is a trend towards more story-driven content and that's where many choreographers are now focusing their attent

Photo credit: ABC/Adam Larkey. With everyone on pins and needles waiting for an official Season 28 order for Dancing With the Stars, it's fun to look back on some of the things that made the show really special over the years. The show began in 2005 with a set that looks fairly stark in comparison to the huge production value they use today. The costumes, the sets and even the lighting weren't as comprehensive as they are now. However the magic of dance — and those sequins —

Super Cr3w Gets Real About Their ‘World of Dance’ Experience

Photo credit:Andrew Eccles/NBC World of Dance has made a huge impact this summer. Not only does it have a Season 2 pickup order from NBC, it also has brought more positive attention to the dance world. That camaraderie was felt at last Saturday’s World of Dance Tour finals in Pasadena, California. More: Dear 'World of Dance'... Dance Network spoke to many of the NBC World of Dance contestants who talked about their experience on the show. Super Cr3w, who was eliminated in the

Where ‘World of Dance’ Is Hitting All Of The Right Notes

Photo credit: Justin Lubin/NBC Last week, I wrote an article about World of Dance and my frustration with the time limits and showcasing some —but not all — of the acts. One of the executive producers sent me a DM addressing my concerns and I really took this message to one of care. I loved that they took the time to read my article and then privately try to solve one of my questions. It shows how much everyone involved in the production really loves this series. Even if Seas

It's Emmys Nominations Day! Here are your 2017 Emmy nominees from three shows: So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing With the Stars and The Real O'Neals. I will do more assessment in the next few days and hopefully answer the question: Why did [insert name] get nominated? There's more to an Emmy nomination than just strong choreography, there's a social game to campaigning that happens all year-long. Enjoy this year's nominated pieces: Derek Hough for Dancing With the Stars Kai

A (Partial) Look Inside The Emmys Choreography Submissions

For the 2015-2016 Emmys year, there were 73 entries for the Choreography category. I wrote down as many as I could in five minutes or less while they played the video. Sometimes I wrote the names, sometimes I recognized the particular dances, but I am missing plenty of names, dances and shows. Once we get Mandy Moore's interview up on Dance Network, I will post it here because she gives us an inside look on how the process works from submissions to final voting. It was incred

Why Maks Chmerkovskiy Is Returning To 'Dancing With The Stars'

Photo credit: Maks Chmerkovskiy/Instagram So Maks Chmerkovskiy decided to return to the ballroom on Dancing With the Stars for Season 23. I watched the reactions pour in on social media yesterday when a photo was leaked from the set of the promo shoot — there was Maks with contestant Amber Rose. So many of you were surprised to see him return, but I really wasn’t. He left the show after winning Season 18 with partner Meryl Davis. It was a great note to leave on; he went out o

Were You Surprised By The 2016 Choreography Emmy Nominees?

Photo credit: ATAS The Emmys nominations list has been announced and I was proven right: lots of surprises this year. I was proven wrong in that the guy who I thought should win isn't even nominated. Sigh. However, I know we will see more from Zach Woodlee soon. He should be proud of his work in Grease Live! The other big snub — Pharside and Phoenix, who defined Season 12 of So You Think You Can Dance with their original choreography. I only hope we see more of their creative
